New York Film Academy (NYFA) Admissions Associate Kurt Kubicek is a producer and director with several films and documentaries under his belt. He’s currently in post-production on Can I Say That?, a new comedy special from Jamie Kennedy that is currently in talks for distribution.
Kubicek previously directed 1/10 of a Second, a feature documentary focusing on the rise, fall, and redemption of Johnny Rock Page, the oldest professional motorcycle racer in the country. The film also features DJ Paul Oakenfold and was an Official Selection at the Phoenix Festival and is currently available in 15 different countries on Amazon Prime/Amazon Instant video and iTunes. Kubicek not only directed 1/10 of a Second, but also wrote and produced it, as well as worked as his own 2nd AD and music supervisor.
Other credits of Kubicek’s include 2016’s Jared and Norman Make a Movie, a short comedy film featuring NFL stars Larry Fitzgerald and Calais Campbell. He was also producer and director of Skin in the Game, a short narrative drama about a music producer’s downfall during the 2008 market crash. The film was an Official Selection in 14 festivals, including Paris, and has won several awards.
Kubicek also produced and directed the short film Come Die With Me (2018), inspired by an unpublished novel and available on Amazon Prime. Additionally, he produced Midnight Clear in 2018, a horror short that premiered on Entertainment Weekly’s website and received distribution from Gun Powder and Sky. Kubicek also acted in the film, and has acted in several other projects as well.
Last year, Kubicek also produced Un Regalo Esencial (An Essential Gift), which shot for five weeks in Costa Rica. The film was directed and co-written by NYFA alum Jose Mario Salas Boza and co-written by NYFA alum Elizabeth Soto-Lara. Both Boza and Soto-Lara are graduates of NYFA’s MA Film & Media program. The film premiered on October 18 in Costa Rican theaters and will be available for streaming later this year.
Kubicek’s most recent project was producing and directing Can I Say That?, a new comedy special from Jamie Kennedy, the film and television star whose credits include Scream, Malibu’s Most Wanted, Enemy of the State, and The Jamie Kennedy Experiment.
“I was thrilled to get the opportunity to direct my first comedy special and work with Jamie Kennedy,” Kubicek tells NYFA. “Researching and getting to know his material was an unforgettable experience. I was able to go to many shows and meet and see the process of some of the biggest comedians and comedy writers in the country. It’s an interesting and very authentic world, and who doesn’t like to work with people and on projects that make you laugh?”
Can I Say That? is currently in post-production and will most likely be available to stream this summer. Kubicek is especially proud of the film, adding, “I believe this will be the first of many comedy specials that I will produce and direct.”
Kubicek is based in Los Angeles, where he also works at New York Film Academy-Los Angeles as part of its committed, talented Admissions team. At NYFA, Kubicek helps facilitate aspiring filmmakers, actors, and other visual artists into enrolling and attending the myriad workshops, conservatories, and degree programs offered at the Academy. His first-hand experience in the industry helps give prospective students a well-rounded idea of the entertainment world they’d be stepping into.
The New York Film Academy congratulates filmmaker, producer, and NYFA Admissions Associate Kurt Kubicek on his success so far and looks forward to the upcoming release of Jamie Kennedy’s Can I Say That? later this year!
