With Transparent winning a Golden Globe for Best Television Comedy, Amazon Studios continues its climb in being a major player in the original streaming content business alongside of Netflix, Hulu and Xbox Video. Now, Amazon Studios has added major fuel to the engine, signing a deal with legendary filmmaker Woody Allen. Allen has churned out original films every year for the past several decades — a large number of which were award-winning films that will stand the test of time. As such, Amazon couldn’t be more thrilled. “Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series,” says Amazon Studios Vice President, Roy Price.
However, Mr. Allen doesn’t seem as enthusiastic in his comments regarding The Untitled Woody Allen Project. “I don’t know how I got into this,” Mr. Allen, 79, said in a statement. “I have no ideas, and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this.”
Perhaps it’s just Allen’s self-deprecating, often pessimistic viewpoint on what could be a daunting project, but if it’s anything like his work on film, we’re sure Amazon made the right decision.
This would be Allen’s first crack at his own original television series, though he did write for The Sid Caesar Show early on his career.
